Anaerobic Digestion
The technology needed for digesting organic waste to produce methane is relatively new to North America, though it is very well-documented and widely tested in Europe and in many other countries around the world. The anaerobic digestion process converts organic waste and residues into valuable renewable energy while reducing also odour and quantity in the process.
1 Substrates and Preparation
The ideal substrate for Biogas production has 10% dry matter, a neutral pH and a carbon-nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 20 30.
All fermentable organic matter can be fed to an anaerobic digester:
- Animal: liquid manure, manure and animal bedding, etc.
- Vegetable: corn, grass clippings, hay, etc.
- Food industry: animal and vegetable waste
- Household waste: compost, municipal sludges, septic systems
2 Methane Production
Methane is produced though a biological process that converts organic matter into renewable energy and digestate fertilizer.
Deprived of oxygen, bacteria can digest organic matter and produce biogas, composed primarily of methane.
Lipp's anaerobic digestion system:
- Exterior finish
- Insulating panels
- Heating pipes
- Inside of digester
- Mixer
- Biogas reservoir
3 Biogas and Digestate
Biogas can be used instead of fuel-oil or natural gas. It can also be burned in a co-generation system to produce electricity or heat.
